Trident ETL Rescue

Took over a stalled healthcare ETL platform, reworked the transformation pipeline around pure functions, and stabilized the Epic import path end to end.

Overview

Brought in by the founder to lead remediation and stabilization efforts, the engagement focused on rescuing a multi-year MVP healthcare ETL integration platform struggling to achieve its version one release. Taking over a codebase established by two preceding engineers, the objective was to resolve critical bottlenecks and correct data transformation outputs to ensure seamless importing into Epic’s platform.

Architectural Strategy

The architectural strategy centered on establishing strict data integrity and determinism within a fragmented ETL pipeline. To resolve the faulty downstream extraction logic, the system architecture was refactored to enforce the principles of pure functions. By ensuring that the data transformation engine relies solely on explicit inputs without side effects, the platform gained a highly predictable, repeatable processing pipeline. This architectural shift was critical for handling complex data enrichment tasks, such as standardizing address fields and grouping duplicate records into deterministic clusters. Isolating the transformation states guaranteed that the heavily manicured payer data remained perfectly consistent from initial ingestion to the final Epic-compatible export schema.

Implementation Details

The technical execution involved an immediate deep-dive code remediation to correct the faulty data extraction and export logic. After securing the core data processing path, engineering efforts focused on systematically clearing a backlog of critical technical debt, specifically patching application security vulnerabilities and optimizing database performance bottlenecks. To improve the user-facing clustering features, new matching algorithms were implemented to group duplicate datasets by specific kinds. All architectural modifications were integrated into production using Git workflows and the existing continuous integration and delivery pipelines. Beyond the core development work, operational responsibilities included managing the weekly data load cycles, which involved executing snapshot backups, preparing the raw payer files, running the clustering engines, and generating the final verified datasets for users to import into Epic.

Outcome & Metrics

The remediation engagement resulted in a rapid, successful stabilization of the platform well ahead of the projected project scope, enabling the version one product launch. Following the architectural fixes, the platform was capable of successfully processing 30,000 healthcare records per round through to Epic, whereas the legacy system was entirely unable to complete a single end-to-end import sequence. This operational pipeline went on to reliably execute for several consecutive production data load rounds under active support, fully validating the accuracy of the updated transformation logic.
