CMS Recipe Scraper

A distributed scraping and content automation platform that indexes recipes and photography across forty sites and assembles syndication roundups in a few clicks.

Overview

A prominent culinary content creator and a coalition of partner bloggers retained me to build a proprietary data aggregation and content automation platform. Facing unfavorable search engine algorithm shifts that threatened their traditional organic traffic models, these creators needed to pivot toward programmatic business-to-business content syndication and rapid digital asset reuse. The objective was to build an enterprise-grade extraction engine capable of scraping full recipe datasets and corresponding high-resolution photography from over forty distinct websites simultaneously. This ingested data needed to feed a highly flexible, real-time curation tool that empowered users to dynamically generate, reorder, and export recipe roundups, which were then pushed automatically to social media platforms to drive targeted traffic back to their primary web properties.

Architectural Strategy

The architectural strategy required a highly resilient, distributed data pipeline capable of bypassing aggressive web-scraping defenses while handling erratic, unmapped layout schemas. I designed the entire codebase as a single TypeScript monorepo managed by Bun to optimize module resolution speeds and memory footprints. To handle the scale of the scraping operations, I decoupled the data harvest into an isolated, event-driven batch architecture. I deployed a rotated network of AWS Lambda proxy instances to handle low-level content retrieval, protecting the system from IP-based rate blocks. Because the infrastructure-as-code toolchain lacked a native containerized batch component, I engineered custom pipeline extensions by utilizing programmatic hooks into Pulumi inside the framework, enabling seamless orchestration of the serverless resources alongside traditional persistent cloud workers.

Implementation Details

The custom automation platform completely transformed the creators’ editorial velocity, allowing them to bypass search algorithm dependency by monetizing their existing cross-platform content assets directly. The automated data pipeline successfully indexed thousands of complex culinary records across forty external domains with zero downtime or extraction failure blocks, executing complex multi-page scraping scripts concurrently. The application completely eliminated the manual hours previously spent building syndication roundups, compressing a multi-day editorial compilation process into a few clicks on the Payload dashboard. Furthermore, the automated Facebook ad integration established a self-sustaining traffic loop that protected the creators’ digital media properties, driving consistent engagement volumes back to their core blogs through fully traceable social campaigns.
