FanPal Optimization

Rebuilt a monolithic media feed into an infinite-scroll pipeline with Redis caching and edge rate limiting, shutting down a Twilio SMS toll-fraud attack.

Overview

The architectural strategy focused on transforming a bloated, monolithic page payload into an efficient, real-time streaming pipeline optimized for user data conservation and fast rendering. To address the frontend and backend bottlenecks, I designed a modern infinite feed architecture that decoupled media asset fetching from the primary database queries. I introduced Redis to the infrastructure layer to act as both a high-speed caching mechanism for hot feed data and a low-latency state store for rate limiting incoming requests. To combat the automated bot infrastructure, the security strategy required establishing defensive perimeters at the application edge and the authentication layer. This involved filtering malicious traffic before it could hit expensive downstream communication APIs without introducing friction for legitimate, paying users.

Implementation Details

The technical execution began with a complete overhaul of the frontend and backend feed rendering logic, implementing cursor-based pagination and strict lazy-loading protocols for all audio, video, and image assets. I configured Redis caching layers to store pre-computed feed states, significantly lowering the read load on the primary database during high-traffic periods. To remediate aggressive SMS toll fraud and token waste caused by bot networks using virtual private networks and foreign phone numbers to sign up, I leveraged Redis to build advanced rate-limiting throttles. I coupled these backend blocks with honeypot fields, geo-blocking logic, and Cloudflare Turnstile integrations to secure all authentication forms. Finally, I improved the overall developer experience by reorganizing the codebase into a clean, modular structure and upgrading the automated continuous integration and delivery tools that push deployments to the AWS cloud infrastructure.

Outcome & Metrics

The architectural refactoring successfully restored platform performance and stabilized the infrastructure under high active user concurrency. Implementing the modern infinite feed pipeline and Redis caching layers completely eliminated initial page load bottlenecks, dramatically reducing client-side bandwidth consumption and speeding up feed rendering times. The security remediation and rate-limiting patterns successfully neutralized the automated bot networks, completely halting the fraudulent Twilio SMS token attacks and saving the client thousands of dollars in unearned operational expenditures.
